Rivers Project (Riverlands) - Lower Mississippi River, Missouri


The Rivers Project is responsible for the operation and maintenance of five dams and seven locks, 300 miles of dikes and revetment and 110,000 acres of public lands and waters for the authorized purpose of maintaining a nine-foot navigation channel on the Upper Mississippi River, and the lower 80 miles of the Illinois River. The Rivers Project recognizes and manages the multi-pupose use of these lands and waters, which include fish and wildlife management, recreation, flood control, navigation, and water supply and quality.

  
Directions:The National Great Rivers Museum is located on the Meeting of the Great Rivers National Scenic Byway on Highway 143. This is about 35 minutes north of Downtown St. Louis and the Gateway Arch. Illinois Route 3 intersects Interstate 270 approximately two miles east of the Mississippi River in Illinois. Take IL Route 3 North to Highway 143. The museum is located off of 143 at Lock & Dam Way in East Alton. Riverlands Project Office: From St. Louis: Take 270 North/East to 367 North towards Alton. Before crossing the Clark Bridge make a right by the FISCA gas station onto Riverlands Way. Follow the signs. From Illinois: Take Route 3 North to 143 West, cross the Clark Bridge and make the first left onto Riverlands Way and follow signs.
